Smart Road Bridge, near Christiansburg, Virginia
Bridge Award of Excellence from the American Segmental Bridge Institute (ASBI)
Soaring over the Ellet Valley, Virginia's tallest bridge at 170 feet is part of the 5.7-mile Smart Road project that connects Virginia Tech with Blacksburg and Interstate 81. The 2,000 ft. long structure with 470 ft. main spans was built using the cast-in-place balanced cantilever construction method. In addition to the post-tensioning, AVAR supplied the form-travelers

Truckee River Bridge, California
Award of Excellence from Portland Cement Association (PCA)
The 1,500 ft. long bridge over the Truckee River carries traffic on State Route 267 bypassing the town of Truckee. The 7-span bridge features a cast-in-place, post-tensioned box girder with spans up to 230 ft. long. The parabolic haunches flow into the piers, resulting in a very elegant arch-like structure.

Seahawks Stadium, Seattle
Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies
The new Seahawks Stadium with a capacity of 72,000 spectators is covered with two roof structures that cover 70 percent of the seating area. Bottom cords of the 720 ft. long super trusses were post-tensioned with five large capacity tendons. Because tendons had to be designed to allow adjustment of prestressing force during the life of the structure and because of weight considerations, grease rather than cement/water grout was selected for corrosion protection.

| During a major storm, the box shaped pontoons cracked and water began leaking into the cells. To retrofit the structure, additional post-tensioning of 390 psi was needed. To achieve this an additional compressive force of 8,000 kips was required. |
On this project AVAR installed 3,600 ft. long tendons - the longest ever installed in the world! Tendons comprised of 15-0.6" dia. strands were pulled into HDPE pipes by means of a special device developed for this tendon length. Grouting was performed with dual grout plants, allowing to fill a tendon with 220 cu. ft. of grout in less than two hours.
Tendons were stressed simultaneously from both ends with four hydraulic jacks during a weekend shut-down of the bridge. Total elongation of each tendon was 24 feet! |
